The octagonal disk is a key comprised of a Kryptonian alloy which had been used to access Clark Kent's spaceship, as well as the Fortress of Solitude.

The disk had originally accompanied Clark on his journey to Earth, but had wound up lost in Miller's Field. In 2002, cropduster Eddie Cole had informed Lex Luthor that he'd seen a spaceship arrive during the 1989 meteor shower, prompting Lex to excavate the field with Dr. Steven Hamilton. Their search had turned up the disk, which had then been stolen by shady reporter Roger Nixon once he'd learned about Clark's spaceship and the disk's purpose. Roger had used the disk to activate the ship, which had sent out a burst of energy that had somehow healed Martha Kent's infertility, before it had been caught up in a series of tornadoes that had struck Smallville. It was during the tornadoes that the disk had once again become separated from the ship, only to eventually turn up in Lionel Luthor's possession. Martha had found it while working for Lionel, and had taken it during a hostage situation at LuthorCorp. Eventually, Lionel had had a kryptonite version of the disk made, complete with Kryptonian symbols. When an A.I. of Jor-El, communicating through Clark's spaceship, had demanded that Clark abandon his loved ones in order to fulfill his destiny, Clark had responded by stealing Lionel's kryptonite key and placing it in the ship, destroying it.

In addition to granting access to Clark's spaceship, the disk also fit an octagonal indentation in the wall of the Kawatche Caves. When Clark had placed the disk in the wall, it had downloaded him with the Kryptonian language. In 2003, after Clark had run away from home, Jonathan Kent had taken the disk to the Kawatche Caves, using the indentation in the wall to speak with Jor-El and ask for his help in bringing Clark home. In 2004, Clark — or rather, his alter ego, Kal-El — had discovered a chamber of the Kawatche Caves with a Kryptonian altar. He'd found he could slip the disk into a slot in the altar to communicate with Jor-El, and after assembling the Stones of Power and creating the Fortress of Solitude, he'd also found he could use the disk and the altar to transport himself to the Fortress and back.
