Along with carrying infant Kal-El to Earth, the spaceship his father Jor-El had built for him had also contained a hard drive that had acted as the ship's heart. In 2001, Kal-El, who by then had been going by the name Clark, had been shown the heart and the spaceship by his adopted father Jonathan Kent, revealing to Clark his alien origins. In early 2003, Clark had figured out what the heart was, and had plugged it into the ship, finding a message from Jor-El, reading: On this third planet from this star Sol, you will be a god among men. They are a flawed race. Rule them with strength, my son. That is where your greatness lies.
