The necklace Lana Lang had worn for most of her life, up until 2002, had consisted of green kryptonite, fashioned from the meteor that had killed her parents. Her aunt Nell had had the necklace made for her to commemorate her adoption of Lana. In 2002, Lana had given the necklace to her boyfriend Whitney Fordman as he'd shipped out for the Marines. The necklace had later made its way back to her after Whitney had gone M.I.A. In early 2003, Clark Kent's spaceship had neutralized the kryptonite, turning the necklace's gem clear. Clark had had it in his possession ever since, before he'd returned it to Lana in 2009.
Because of the radiation in Lana's necklace, Clark had been unable to even get near her without feeling ill. When the spaceship had neutralized the kryptonite, however, he could finally stand to be near her.
Former metahuman Jordan Cross had once had a vision of her wearing the necklace on her deathbed.
