After twenty years of coaching football at Smallville High, head coach Walt Arnold had been gifted his own personal sauna by the school's alumni association. He'd wound up using it frequently, heating it with kryptonite. In 2001, Coach Arnold had found that the kryptonite radiation had combined with the steam, and had given him pyrokinetic abilities. He had then used his newfound abilities to try to cover up a cheating scandal involving some of his players. When Clark Kent had tried to stop him, Coach Arnold had tried to use his abilities on Clark, only for his powers to get out of control and wind up consuming him.
